‘The Ladder’ Descends Into Darkness — Horror Movie Explores a Church Basement’s Terrifying Secret

Hangman and Songbird director Adam Mason is returning to his horror roots with The Ladder, a new psychological nightmare from A Higher Standard and Nickel City Pictures, according to Deadline.

In the film, Emma and her husband Clay move into a converted church in rural Ireland—only to uncover a hidden hatch in the basement that conceals a ladder descending into complete darkness. Drawn by curiosity and obsession, Emma risks everything to uncover where it leads… and what might be waiting at the bottom.

Mason co-wrote the script with longtime collaborator Simon Boyes, promising a mix of folklore, claustrophobic tension, and psychological dread.

The project is produced by Mark Fasano (Nickel City Pictures) and Jeffrey Greenstein (A Higher Standard), with Matthew Goldberg executive producing and Emily Hromin co-producing.

Greenstein called the story “tense and gripping, based on a legend that’s terrifying enough on its own,” adding that Mason is “the perfect filmmaker to bring it to life.”

Fasano echoed the sentiment, saying, “Horror audiences have become more sophisticated. They want intelligent scripts, complex characters, and genuine terror—and The Ladder delivers all of that.”

A chilling descent into obsession and the unknown, The Ladder looks ready to become one of the most unsettling horror films on the horizon.
