You won’t have to wait long to see Mason Gooding back in action. Fresh off Scream 7 hitting theaters next week, the rising genre favorite returns to the big screen in The Gates, arriving in select theaters March 13 via Lionsgate.

The tense thriller also marks the final film appearance of James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek), who passed away last week, adding an emotional weight to the film’s release.

The newly released trailer teases a paranoid, pressure-cooker nightmare co-starring Algee Smith (Euphoria), Keith Powers (The Tomorrow War), and Brad Leland (Friday Night Lights).

The film follows three college students (Gooding, Smith, and Powers) whose road trip spirals into chaos after they take a reckless shortcut through a secluded gated community. When they witness a murder, they quickly find themselves trapped behind locked gates — and accused of the crime.

As paranoia spreads over the course of one long, harrowing night, the friends are hunted by residents and divided by their own conflicting beliefs. At the center of it all is Van Der Beek’s calculating patriarch — a manipulative figure who exerts chilling control over the entire community.

The film is written and directed by John Burr (Muse). In a statement shared with Collider, Burr reflected on Van Der Beek’s passing:

“Even though he is no longer with us, his energy somehow feels like it lives on, bringing us all back together again, inspiring us to live life the way he did. I am grateful for that. And so, on behalf of the entire filmmaking team, I’d like to express our heartbreak at James’ passing, and our joy to have been so lucky to know him.”

Producers include Nancy Leopardi, Ross Kohn, and Gary Glushon. Executive producers include Gooding, Andy Dube, Michael Leon Cassutt, John Harris, J. Todd Harris, David Gendron, Ali Jazayeri, Viviana Zarragoitia, and Kamala Avila-Salmon.

The Gates is rated R for “violence, language, some sexual references, and brief drug use.”
