Director Anthony C. Ferrante, who is responsible for shark movies that defined a generation of CGI-infused disaster films featuring the oceanic man-eaters, is releasing another one on July 4 called Great White Waters. Ferrante was the man behind a slew of SYFY Channel Sharknado films from 2013-2018.
The first in the franchise became a pop culture hit that not only parodied this specific genre, but also breathed new life into it. Although the film was undeniably corny, people embraced it for being somewhat meta and hilariously referential to others that came before it.
Speaking of which, the original great white creature feature, Jaws, is celebrating 50 years since its theatrical release, just in time for Ferrante’s stand-alone shark film, Great White Waters, premiering July 4 on Tubi. Looking at the trailer, this one seems a little more…grounded…than his previous fare, still it has that CGI touch Ferrante is known for.
Ferrante has gone on to do other films beyond his Sharknado franchise, including a spin-off series and multiple horror/disaster films. Great White Waters might be a good watch for those who are looking to celebrate 50 years of Jaws but without the reverence.
