‘Saccharine’ Lands R Rating for Graphic Body Horror and Disturbing Imagery

What’s a body horror movie without pushing boundaries?

Writer-director Natalie Erika James (Relic, Apartment 7A) is doing exactly that with Saccharine, which has officially been slapped with an R rating by the MPA for “disturbing content, grisly images, sexuality, drug use, graphic nudity, and language.”

With the rating now locked in, a release announcement from IFC and Shudder is likely right around the corner.

Before that, festival audiences will get a taste. Saccharine screens at the Boston Underground Film Festival this weekend, followed by a showing at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans next month.

The Australian supernatural body horror story centers on Hana, a heartbroken medical student who finds herself haunted by a malevolent force after diving into a bizarre and dangerous weight-loss trend: consuming human ashes.

The film stars Midori Francis (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), and Madeleine Madden (“The Wheel of Time”).

Production comes from Carver Films and Thrum Films, with financing provided by Screen Australia alongside XYZ Films, IPR.VC, and Stan, in association with VicScreen.
