Rachel Weisz Boards ‘Séance on a Wet Afternoon’
Tomas Alfredson is officially rolling cameras on Séance on a Wet Afternoon, a new adaptation of Mark McShane’s 1961 novel, bringing together a stacked cast for a psychological crime thriller steeped in deception and the supernatural.
Leading the film is Rachel Weisz, best known to horror fans for The Mummy. She’ll star alongside Matthew Macfadyen of Succession fame and Joe Alwyn, who previously appeared in The Favourite.
Currently shooting in the U.K., the film is written by Emmy-winning writer Jack Thorne, co-creator of the TV drama Adolescence.
The story centers on Myra, a self-proclaimed psychic medium who convinces her husband Billy to kidnap the son of a wealthy family. Her plan is chillingly calculated: stage the child’s disappearance so she can “locate” him using her supposed supernatural abilities, proving her powers to the world. But when Myra’s real motives begin to surface, Billy realizes the scheme may spiral far beyond their control.
Behind the camera, Alfredson has assembled a notable creative team, including cinematographer Marcell Rév (Euphoria), production designer Jacqueline Abrahams (The Lobster), costume designer Sarah Blenkinsop (also The Lobster), hair and make-up designer Daniel Phillips (No Time to Die), and casting director Jina Jay, known for her work on Black Mirror.
Production comes from Astral Projection, with Weisz producing alongside Polly Stokes. Element Pictures producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe are also on board, along with producer Robyn Slovo. Executive producers include Thorne, Macfadyen, Farhana Bhul, and David Kimbangi. Financing is provided by Film4 and Fremantle.
International sales are being handled by FilmNation Entertainment, while domestic rights are overseen by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance.
The novel was previously adapted for the screen in 1964 by director Bryan Forbes, starring Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough. That version later inspired the 2000 Japanese horror film Seance and even an opera adaptation that premiered in 2009.
With Alfredson returning to dark psychological territory after Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, this new take on Séance on a Wet Afternoon could deliver a chilling blend of crime and occult obsession.
