Next Paranormal Activity Movie Finds a Director, James Wan Producing

The terror isn’t over. Paramount and Blumhouse are gearing up for a new chapter in the Paranormal Activity franchise, with James Wan producing alongside Jason Blum and franchise creator Oren Peli. Now we know who will be guiding the latest installment: rising Canadian filmmaker Ian Tuason (Undertone).

Tuason, a Toronto-based writer-director, got his start with live-action VR horror shorts that racked up millions of views on YouTube and even screened at SXSW. He made waves this summer with his feature Undertone, which premiered at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Canadian Film. A24 recently acquired the film for release.

In Undertone, paranormal podcast host Evy moves into her dying mother’s home as her caregiver. When she receives audio recordings of a young pregnant couple experiencing supernatural disturbances, she realizes the haunting mirrors her own life — each recording gnaws at her sanity, drawing her toward a fate she can’t escape.

Speaking to THR, Wan shared his excitement for the franchise’s next chapter:

“I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.”

With Tuason at the helm, the eighth Paranormal Activity promises to push the franchise into new territory while honoring the slow-burn terror that made the series a cultural phenomenon.
