As we embrace the arrival of summer, horror movie enthusiasts are in for a treat with a lineup of thrilling releases. Dubbed the Summer of Screams, get ready for a season packed with spine-chilling entertainment. This week, the spotlight falls on Stephen King and the return of the ‘Subspecies‘ franchise. Here are the exciting new horror movies hitting the screens from May 30 to June 4, 2023.

Kicking off the roster, Addison Heath and Jasmine Jakupi’s indie slasher ‘My Cherry Pie‘ is now available on various VOD platforms. Described as a gory slice of retro horror, the film follows three criminals on the run who seek refuge in an infamous old hospital, unaware that a masked killer lurks within its walls. Glenn Maynard, Trudi Ranik, and Sotiris Tzelios lead the cast.

Sylvia Caminer’s horror film ‘Follow Her,’ which gained recognition during its successful festival run, is set to hit limited theaters and VOD platforms on June 2. Distributed by Quiver, the movie revolves around Jess (Dani Barker), who covertly records disturbing encounters from online job listings for her streaming success. When she accepts an assignment at a remote cabin, the enigmatic client, Tom (Luke Cook), hands her a script that blurs the line between reality and fiction. As Jess delves deeper, she realizes that her life might be at stake. Brace yourself for this psycho-sexual thriller that questions the ethical boundaries of social media.

Full Moon’s beloved ‘Subspecies‘ franchise returns with its fifth installment, ‘Subspecies V: Bloodrise,’ an epic prequel that unveils the origin story of the immortal vampire Radu. Set for a worldwide co-streaming premiere on June 2 exclusively on SCREAMBOX and Full Moon Features, the movie showcases Radu’s descent from a noble warrior to a bloodthirsty creature of the night. Anders Hove reprises his role as Radu, joined by original series star Denice Duff. Prepare for a captivating and operatic exploration of evil in this visually stunning entry into the iconic franchise.

Lastly, inspired by the mind of Stephen King, 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps present ‘The Boogeyman,’ hitting theaters on June 2. Directed by Rob Savage, the film follows high school student Sadie Harper and her sister Sawyer, who are grappling with the recent loss of their mother. When a desperate patient leaves behind a malevolent supernatural entity that preys on suffering, the family becomes ensnared in a terrifying ordeal. This classic horror movie, reminiscent of ‘Poltergeist,’ masterfully combines scares with heartfelt storytelling. Prepare for an intense cinematic experience brought to life by a talented cast, including Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, Vivien Lyra Blair, and Madison Hu.

Stay tuned for more updates on the thrilling releases as the Summer of Screams continues to deliver an array of captivating horror movies.
