Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist’ Reboot Begins Filming
Production has officially begun on ‘The Exorcist‘, with filmmaker Mike Flanagan confirming that cameras are now rolling in New York City.
“Day 1… here we go,” Flanagan wrote on Instagram, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of the clapperboard from the first day of filming.
The slate also revealed that longtime collaborator Michael Fimognari—who previously worked with Flanagan on The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep—is serving as director of photography.
Flanagan’s film will tell an entirely new story within the iconic The Exorcist universe. It’s neither a remake of William Friedkin’s legendary 1973 classic nor a continuation of The Exorcist: Believer. Instead, the project aims to expand the mythology with a fresh narrative.
The cast is stacked with major talent, including Scarlett Johansson, Jacobi Jupe, Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sasha Calle, and John Leguizamo.
Frequent Flanagan collaborators are also returning, including Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Benjamin Pajak, and Carla Gugino.
Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, though Johansson is reportedly playing a mother with Jupe portraying her son.
Flanagan is producing through Red Room Pictures alongside Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, with David Robinson producing for Morgan Creek Entertainment. Executive producers include Red Room’s Alexandra Magistro and Blumhouse’s Ryan Turek.
Flanagan has already teased that the film aims to push the franchise into new territory.
“This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise—something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia,” Flanagan said. “I really saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am.”
The Exorcist is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 12, 2027, via Universal Pictures.
Before that, Flanagan has several other genre projects on the horizon, including a series adaptation of Carrie expected to premiere on Prime Video this October. He also co-wrote Clayface, arriving October 23, and remains attached to a new adaptation of The Mist.
