After reimagining The Exorcist, modern horror auteur Mike Flanagan is diving back into the world of Stephen King.

Deadline reports that Flanagan is set to write and direct a new adaptation of King’s classic novella The Mist.

Flanagan will also produce the film through Red Room, alongside Tyler Thompson and Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone. Alexandra Magistro will serve as executive producer for Red Room.

Set in a small Maine town, the story follows a community consumed by a mysterious, all-encompassing fog. From the mist emerge nightmarish creatures that attack the townsfolk, forcing a group of survivors to take refuge in a local grocery store. As fear escalates, mob mentality rises, and unhinged extremists inside become as dangerous as the monsters outside.

Originally published in the 1980 anthology Dark Forces and later included in King’s 1985 collection Skeleton Crew, The Mist has previously inspired a 2007 feature film directed by Frank Darabont and a 2017 TV series on Spike.

This will be Flanagan’s fifth Stephen King adaptation, following Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck, and the upcoming Carrie series. With his signature blend of tension, character-driven horror, and shocking visuals, fans can expect a fresh—and terrifying—take on the classic story.
