Maika Monroe Teases “Incredible” Script for ‘They Follow’ — A Very Different Sequel to ‘It Follows’

Maika Monroe, star of It Follows, has shared a promising update on the long-awaited sequel They Follow — and it sounds like fans are in for something completely new.

“I was sent the script, and I thought it was incredible. It’s very different from the original,” Monroe told Discussing Film. “The first movie was a bit more heightened and dramatic. This one feels grounded — it follows two women struggling mentally with a lot. It’s a really interesting take.”

Monroe confirmed she’s set to reprise her role as Jay Height, the haunted survivor of the 2014 cult horror hit. A decade later, the mysterious curse continues to spread, and Jay’s story takes an unexpected turn. “Where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool,” Monroe teased. “It’s bigger, darker, and more fucked up.”

Writer-director David Robert Mitchell returns to helm the sequel, with It Follows composer Disasterpeace in talks to score once again. They Follow is being produced by Neon and Good Fear Content, with rumors suggesting production could finally kick off in 2026.

Monroe will next appear alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Hulu’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, streaming tomorrow.
