Kevin Williamson Says He Has No Plans to Direct ‘Scream 8’
Scream 8 hasn’t officially been announced yet, but after the massive success of Scream 7, another sequel feels almost inevitable.
The latest entry in the 30-year slasher franchise has already carved up roughly $150 million at the worldwide box office and is on track to become the highest-grossing film in the series. With numbers like that, it’s hard to imagine the Ghostface killings stopping anytime soon.
But if Scream 8 does happen, don’t expect Kevin Williamson to be back behind the camera.
Williamson — who famously wrote the original 1996 classic and stepped into the director’s chair for the first time in the franchise with Scream 7 — recently told fan site Hello Sidney that he’s likely planning to step aside for the next installment.
“I think the next Scream I’ll probably step back,” Williamson said. “I want to direct another film that I’ve written. It’s just waiting for me to find the time to make it. Right now I’m also working on a couple of TV shows. Maybe I’ll direct one of those — who knows.”
Williamson also hinted that he’d like to see another filmmaker take a shot at steering the iconic horror series.
“I have some ideas about where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller might do with it,” he explained. “It’s great being part of the Scream family, but that doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct. Other people can take the reins, and I’m excited to see what they come up with.”
Still, Williamson made it clear he hopes the franchise continues.
“I’m hopeful there will be a Scream 8,” he added.
Outside of Ghostface territory, Williamson is currently busy developing several television projects. One of them is a new series set in the Universal Monsters universe, which he describes as “an adult Vampire Diaries.”
“It’s set in the Universal monster world,” Williamson teased. “I get to play with characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man and have some fun with them.”
For now, Scream 8 hasn’t been officially greenlit, but given the momentum of the franchise, it feels less like a question of if and more like when.
