Justine Lupe (Mr. Mercedes, Succession) has signed on for Apple Original Films’ upcoming psychological thriller Sponsor, according to Deadline.

The SAG Award–winning actress joins an impressive cast that includes Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), John C. Reilly (Kong: Skull Island), and Amy Madigan (Weapons).

The film is directed by James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, The Circle), who co-wrote the script with Segel.

Sponsor centers on Peter (Segel), whose life spirals after a reckless night of partying ends in a devastating accident. Faced with an ultimatum—prison time or mandatory recovery—Peter reluctantly chooses rehab, despite being convinced he doesn’t have a drinking problem.

At his first meeting, Peter goes searching for a sponsor and finds Jerry (Reilly), a blunt, magnetic, and quietly unsettling presence. Certain Jerry is exactly what he needs, Peter places his trust in the enigmatic figure—setting the stage for a psychological descent where control, manipulation, and obsession blur together.

The film is being produced by Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Alex Ginno, alongside Segel and Ponsoldt.

Production is expected to begin soon in California.

Sponsor reunites Segel and Ponsoldt following their work on Apple TV+’s Shrinking, which returns for its third season on January 28, as well as their 2015 collaboration The End of the Tour.
