Sixteen years after its misunderstood release, Jennifer’s Body has risen from cult obscurity to become one of the most beloved horror comedies of the 2000s — and now, a sequel is officially in development.

Director Karyn Kusama confirmed to Deadline that writer Diablo Cody is actively working on the follow-up.

“I know she’s working on it right now, and I’m very excited to hear what comes of it,” Kusama said. “It sounds fun and crazy like the first film, and I have no doubt Diablo will do something absolutely incredible with it.”

Kusama reflected on the film’s long journey to cult classic status.

“I’m just so grateful that the film managed to find its audience — maybe not when we first hoped, but I’m thankful the work continues to speak to people.”

Cody has previously expressed her desire to revisit the world of Jennifer’s Body, telling Bloody Disgusting that she’s been waiting for the right team to make it happen:

“I am not done with Jennifer’s Body. I just need to partner with people who believe in it as much as I do.”

Amanda Seyfried has hinted that she’d return as Needy, and fans are hopeful that Megan Fox will once again bring Jennifer Check back from the dead.

Originally released in 2009, Jennifer’s Body followed a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed and starts killing her male classmates, leaving her best friend to stop the bloodshed.

The cult favorite co-starred Johnny Simmons, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, Adam Brody, and Kyle Gallner, and is now celebrated as a sharp, feminist horror satire that was well ahead of its time.

Stay tuned — Jennifer’s Body might just be resurrected again, hungrier than ever.
