James Cameron Confirms ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Remake Is in Development With a New Director

James Cameron’s long-standing passion project Fantastic Voyage may finally be heading toward production.

The legendary filmmaker has flirted with remaking the classic sci-fi adventure for decades—initially envisioning himself as writer-director before shifting into a producer role in more recent years. Now, Cameron says real momentum is building behind the project.

In a new interview with Deadline, Cameron confirmed he’s currently collaborating with an unnamed director and hopes to launch the long-gestating remake as early as 2026.

“I’ve been nurturing that for a while. I hope to get that going this coming year,” Cameron said.

He went on to clarify his involvement, adding, “I’ll be producing it. I’m working with a director right now with a new script. So, yeah, we’re gonna do it.”

Originally released in 1966, Fantastic Voyage centers on a groundbreaking scientific mission gone wrong. When a scientist who possesses the secret to miniaturization falls into a coma, a team of specialists is shrunk down and injected into his body to repair a life-threatening blood clot from the inside.

The original film became a landmark of science fiction cinema, winning two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects, while earning three additional nominations. It was directed by Richard Fleischer (Soylent Green, Conan the Destroyer) from a script by Harry Kleiner (Bullitt, Red Heat), and starred Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, Edmond O’Brien, Donald Pleasence, and Arthur Kennedy.

Over the years, the remake has attracted an impressive list of filmmakers, including Guillermo del Toro, Shawn Levy, Paul Greengrass, and Roland Emmerich, but none managed to bring the project to fruition.

With Cameron now actively producing and a new script in development, Fantastic Voyage may finally be ready to take audiences on another terrifying trip into the human body.
