HBO Brings ‘V for Vendetta’ to TV With James Gunn at the Helm
Twenty years after James McTeigue brought V for Vendetta to the big screen, HBO is now developing a TV series based on the iconic dystopian story, Variety reports.
Sources say Pete Jackson is attached to write the adaptation, with James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios executive producing. Additional executive producers include Ben Stephenson (Poison Pen) and Leanne Klein (Wall to Wall Media, part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK). The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Set in a near-future Britain dominated by the fascist Norsefire party, the story follows the masked anarchist V as he fights to dismantle the oppressive government. V is aided by Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescues from the country’s secret police, echoing the narrative of the original tale.
V for Vendetta began as a British graphic novel by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, published between 1982 and 1985. The 2005 film adaptation, written by the Wachowskis and starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman, remains a landmark in political and dystopian storytelling.
The new HBO series promises to revisit the story’s iconic themes of rebellion, identity, and resistance in a serialized format for a modern audience.
