‘Freaks 2’: Final Destination Bloodlines Directors Return with Sci-Fi Thriller Sequel
Before becoming hot-ticket directors with Final Destination Bloodlines, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein made their mark with the indie sci-fi thriller Freaks (2018).
According to Deadline, the duo quietly wrote, directed, and produced Freaks 2 earlier this year. Production took place after Bloodlines wrapped post-production but before its press cycle, giving Lipovsky and Stein a chance to expand the world of their original indie hit.
Sabrina Pitre, editor on both Freaks and Bloodlines, returns to cut the sequel. Other plot details are being kept under wraps.
The first Freaks centers on 7-year-old Chloe, kept locked inside by her father. She lives in fear and fascination of the outside world, where “abnormals” supposedly pose a constant threat. When a mysterious stranger offers Chloe a glimpse of reality beyond her walls, she discovers that the truth is far more complicated — and the danger is very real.
The cast included Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and Lexy Kolker, who drew praise for her breakout performance. Reviewer Rafael Motamayor called Freaks “an even more grounded, small-scale version of the X-Men… filled with surprises, a message about parenthood, and a future star in Lexy Kolker.”
Lipovsky and Stein’s upcoming slate is packed: they’re co-writing Gremlins 3 with Chris Columbus, directing the sci-fi survival film The Earthling for Columbia, the psychological horror Long Lost for Amblin, and the sci-fi drama The Traveler for Paramount.
