A week after a cryptic teaser appeared online, IFC and Shudder have officially acquired the controversial horror remake Faces of Death, according to Variety. The meta reimagining of the infamous 1978 faux-documentary will hit theaters April 10, marking IFC’s widest release to date.

Directed by Daniel Goldhaber (Cam, How to Blow Up a Pipeline) from a script co-written with Isa Mazzei (Cam), the film updates the original’s notorious “Is it real or not?” premise for the digital age.

Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) stars as a content moderator for a major video platform who stumbles upon what appear to be re-enactments of the original Faces of Death murders. In a world where nothing online can be trusted, she must determine whether the footage depicts staged horror—or actual crimes unfolding in real time.

The cast also includes Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You), Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear), and pop superstar Charli XCX.

Production is handled by Legendary Entertainment, Don Murphy & Susan Montford of Angry Films Entertainment, and Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath of Divide/Conquer, with Mazzei, Derek Bishé, and Rick Benattar serving as executive producers.

“Growing up in video store culture, I was terrified even to touch the original Faces of Death VHS,” said RLJE acquisition officer Mark Ward. “That legend haunted a generation, and bringing that fear back now is deeply personal. Daniel Goldhaber’s reimagining is unsettling, timely, and provocative, and we can’t wait to unleash it in theaters this spring.”

Murphy and Montford added, “After 16 years of working with the Faces of Death IP, we wanted to honor it properly. Isa and Danny’s real-world-stakes approach and their debut feature Cam made them the perfect team to bring this chilling story to a new generation.”

Filmed in 2023, Faces of Death is rated R for “strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language, and drug use.”
