‘Faces of Death’ Posters Spark Controversy, Censored for Public Display

After running into issues with its teaser trailer, Faces of Death is making headlines again—this time for its posters. Discussing Film reports that the MPA has banned the film’s artwork from public display, calling it “too intense/disturbing for in-theatre placements where children may see the advertisements passing by.”

The meta-horror remake of the infamous 1978 faux documentary hits theaters on April 10 via Independent Film Company and Shudder.

The reboot follows a content moderator for a major video platform who uncovers what appear to be re-enactments of the grisly murders featured in Faces of Death. In an online landscape where nothing is as it seems, she must determine if the violence she’s seeing is staged—or horrifyingly real.

The cast includes Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria), Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You), and pop star Charli XCX.

Directed by Daniel Goldhaber (Cam, How to Blow Up a Pipeline) from a script co-written with Isa Mazzei (Cam), the film is produced by Legendary Entertainment, Don Murphy & Susan Montford of Angry Films Entertainment, and Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath of Divide/Conquer, with Mazzei, Derek Bishé, and Rick Benattar serving as executive producers.

Filmed in 2023, Faces of Death carries an R rating for “strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language, and drug use,” promising a return to the shocking legacy of the original.
