What feels worse than the daily grind on a crowded train? Getting trapped in Exit 8. The trailer for this Japanese psychological horror thriller drops viewers into a sterile, endless subway passageway where one misstep could mean starting over—forever.
Based on the hit video game by Kotake Create, Exit 8 follows a man desperate to find the eponymous exit. The rules are simple but unforgiving: notice any anomaly and turn back, or continue—but fail to spot a single irregularity, and you’re sent back to the beginning. Can he survive the infinite corridor and finally escape?
Kawamura Genki (Your Name) directs from a script he co-wrote with Kentaro Hirase. The cast is led by Kazunari Ninomiya (Letters from Iwo Jima), alongside Yamato Kôchi, Naru Asanuma, Kotone Hanase, and Nana Komatsu (Silence).
Producers include Kenji Yamada (Godzilla Minus One), Yuto Sakata, Akito Yamamoto, and Taichi Ito.
Exit 8 premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, earning an eight-minute standing ovation, and went on to screen at TIFF, Sitges, Beyond Fest, Busan, and Rotterdam. The film was a major hit in Japan, grossing over $27 million during its fall release.
Critics are taking notice. Meagan Navarro, writing for TIFF, praised the film’s immersive design: “The true magic of Exit 8 lies with its impressive ability to recreate the feeling of playing a game, as you find yourself scouring the walls, floors, and ceilings of a cosmic backroom hallway to assist the Lost Man in his search for anomalies.”
Exit 8 hits theaters nationwide on April 10 via Neon—just don’t overlook anything.
