Ethan Hawke and Orlando Bloom Set to Star in Jungle Thriller ‘The Last of the Tribe’
Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone) and Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings) are set to headline the jungle thriller The Last of the Tribe, according to Variety.
The film is directed by Claudio Borrelli from a script by Mark Bailey (Downfall: The Case Against Boeing), adapted from investigative journalist Monte Reel’s 2010 novel of the same name.
Set deep within the Amazon rainforest, the story follows William Phelan (Hawke), a burned-out former Chicago cop turned corporate mercenary who is dispatched to investigate a mysterious death. His mission takes an unexpected turn when he encounters the last surviving member of an Indigenous tribe, forcing him to confront both the brutal environment and his own moral collapse.
Indigenous Brazilian activist Zaya Guarani also stars.
Academy Award–winning producer Edward Saxon (The Silence of the Lambs) produces alongside Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz for Chockstone Pictures, Mark Bailey, and Ethan and Ryan Hawke. City of God director Fernando Meirelles serves as executive producer through O2 Filmes.
Protagonist Pictures will launch international sales ahead of next month’s European Film Market in Berlin.
“I’m drawn to films that slam the raw, the rugged, and the cruel head-on into the beautiful and the divine,” said Borrelli. “In this story, the rainforest is both the villain and the savior — that eternal conflict is the essence of what I want to capture in The Last of the Tribe.”
Producers described the project as “a tense, edge-of-your-seat thriller” that also tackles timely themes, including the destruction of the rainforest and the people who depend on it. They added that Hawke and Bloom bring intelligence, passion, and commitment to a story with real-world urgency.
Protagonist CEO Dave Bishop echoed that sentiment, calling the film “an intense, propulsive thriller with real moral weight,” and praised its blend of elevated genre storytelling and contemporary relevance as it prepares to debut for buyers at EFM.
