Blumhouse Acquires Rights to ‘Saw’ Franchise, Reuniting with James Wan and Leigh Whannell
Just two weeks after Deadline’s explosive report teased a major shakeup in the Saw franchise, Variety has now confirmed the news: Blumhouse has officially acquired rights to the long-running horror series, teaming up with Lionsgate to resurrect Jigsaw’s twisted legacy.
Here’s a quick refresher…
The Saw franchise found itself in limbo after Saw XI was abruptly pulled from its planned September 26, 2025 release date. Despite Saw X performing well both critically and financially, behind-the-scenes tensions between co-rights holders Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures reportedly derailed the next installment, throwing the future of the franchise into uncertainty.
So, what changed?
Blumhouse has now stepped in, purchasing Twisted Pictures’ 50% ownership stake in Saw. Lionsgate retains the other half, and the two powerhouse studios will now collaborate on all upcoming Saw projects—including films, series, and other media tied to the infamous Jigsaw killer.
In a move that’s sure to excite longtime fans, Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are also returning to help steer the franchise into its next chapter.
“Saw holds a special place in my heart,” Wan said in a statement. “Coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is thrilling and deeply personal. For me, this will mark a significant creative return to the franchise for the first time since the early days, and I’m very much looking forward to embracing the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways.”
More updates are expected soon as the next phase of Saw begins to take shape. Stay tuned.
