‘Backrooms’ Movie Teaser from A24 Promises Liminal Horror in May 2026
A24 is ready to drag audiences into a full-blown liminal nightmare. The studio’s upcoming horror feature Backrooms brings director Kane Parsons’ massively viral YouTube universe to the big screen.
Produced by James Wan, Backrooms is currently set to open in theaters on May 29, 2026, and the first eerie teaser trailer has arrived online.
The unsettling preview offers a taste of the film’s creeping dread, with a voice ominously explaining:
“I found something… I found a place. It’s massive in there. It just goes on and on and on. All these rooms. This place built them. Actually more like it remembers them. And the more times it remembers something, the less it does.”
According to the official synopsis, “a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom,” setting the stage for the film’s descent into the endless maze.
Cast and Creative Team
The ensemble cast includes:
- Chiwetel Ejiofor
- Renate Reinsve
- Mark Duplass
- Finn Bennett
- Lukita Maxwell
- Avan Jogia
The science fiction horror film is based on the world created by Kane Parsons, whose Kane Pixels YouTube series helped push the Backrooms mythology into the mainstream. Parsons, a teenage director and VFX artist when the series exploded online, has racked up nearly 100 million views with his found-footage shorts.
What Are the Backrooms?
The Backrooms originated from a 2019 4chan post and quickly became one of the internet’s most recognizable liminal space legends. The concept typically depicts an impossibly vast, extradimensional maze of empty, yellow-lit rooms that can be entered by “no-clipping” out of reality.
Parsons’ viral videos expanded that mythology with a found-footage aesthetic that clearly inspired A24’s feature adaptation.
Production Details
The film is a collaboration between A24, Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment, with Will Soodik and Roberto Patino handling the screenplay. James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Atomic Monster.
Meanwhile, NEON is also tapping into liminal horror with Exit 8, the upcoming film adaptation of Kotake Create’s popular video game, arriving in theaters on April 10.
