There may be something far worse than strangers lurking in the shadows in the first trailer for Hokum, the new horror film from writer-director Damian McCarthy (Oddity, Caveat).

The chilling supernatural thriller arrives in theaters May 1 from Neon and has been officially rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “some violent/disturbing content and language.”

In the film, Adam Scott (Severance) stars as reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman, who travels to a remote inn in Ireland to scatter the ashes of his parents. But the quiet retreat quickly turns unsettling when the inn’s staff begin sharing eerie stories about an ancient witch said to haunt the property’s honeymoon suite.

What starts as local folklore soon seeps into Ohm’s reality. Disturbing visions and the sudden disappearance of a guest pull him deeper into a terrifying mystery—one that forces him to confront the darkest parts of his own past.

The film’s cast also includes Peter Coonan (The Alienist: Angel of Darkness), David Wilmot (Station Eleven), Florence Ordesh (Departure), Michael Patric (Frontier), Will O’Connell (Game of Thrones), Brendan Conroy (Bodkin), and Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead).

Behind the scenes, the film is produced by Roy Lee (Weapons) and Steven Schneider (Insidious) for Spooky Pictures, alongside Derek Dauchy of Image Nation (Late Night with the Devil), and Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde, and Mairtín de Barra of Tailored Films. Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum also produce under Cweature Features.

Executive producers include Ben Ross (Late Night with the Devil), Dan Kagan (Longlegs), Rami Yasin (Late Night with the Devil), and Andrew Childs (The Long Walk).

Hokum will make its world premiere this weekend at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, ahead of its theatrical release this spring.
