A24’s Viral Horror ‘The Backrooms’ Just Got a Star-Studded Cast Boost
Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube sensation The Backrooms is making the leap from the internet to the big screen, and the cast just got even more stacked. According to Variety, Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennett (True Detective), Lukita Maxwell (Afraid), and Avan Jogia (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City) have officially joined the upcoming A24 horror feature.
They’ll star alongside previously announced leads Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve.
Based on Parsons’ wildly popular analog horror series that first debuted in 2022, The Backrooms explores a nightmarish alternate dimension made up of endless, liminal office spaces and otherworldly terrors. Though the plot for the film is still under wraps, the original YouTube videos—which have racked up over 190 million views—follow a young filmmaker who accidentally slips into this bizarre reality.
At just 20 years old, Parsons is making his feature directorial debut with the film, becoming the youngest filmmaker to collaborate with A24. The screenplay comes from Will Soodik (Westworld), with Roberto Patino (Sons of Anarchy, Westworld) also contributing to the script.
The project is a powerhouse collaboration between A24, Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment. James Wan and Michael Clear are producing on behalf of Atomic Monster.
Production kicks off this week in Canada. Stay tuned—more creepy corridors and casting news from The Backrooms are likely just around the corner.
